Challenge

Meridian, a Related California property, aims to integrate affordable and developmentally disabled housing options into downtown Sunnyvale on a 1.4-acre site while enhancing community engagement and pedestrian experience.

Argus’ objective was to develop and implement branding that captures the essence of Meridian: the residents, community, and architecture, to identify the property and guide residents and visitors to and through it meaningfully. Ultimately, our aim is to provide a sense of place that enhances a feeling of warmth and comfort within this distinct, high-quality, and dignified home.  

Solution

Meridian tackles this challenge through meticulous design and community-focused planning. The development comprises north and south buildings surrounding a generous courtyard. It offers 90 modern apartments, seven townhomes and street-level stoops that seamlessly connect to residential and commercial areas. Landscaped outdoor spaces and pathways further integrate the property with the surrounding community, with 23 apartments specifically designed to support individuals with developmental disabilities.

The project meets its goals through accessible amenities, open spaces, and visual connections to residential courtyards. Its scaled massing facilitates a community-friendly site plan and enhances the pedestrian experience, fostering connectivity and inclusivity.

Argus visually communicated resident messages through the branding, emphasizing access to a modern, welcoming, and caring home within a vibrant community, highlighting Meridian as a great neighbor intricately connected to the dynamic fabric of Sunnyvale.

Argus crafted Meridian’s branding, including the name, identity, signage, wayfinding, and mural artwork, driven by three core principles. Firstly, it promises Home: a dignified living space that seamlessly integrates with its Sunnyvale surroundings, emphasizing accountability to residents and neighbors. Secondly, it emphasizes Community: Meridian seeks to invigorate the neighborhood’s vibrancy and cultivate a collaborative environment, reflecting the development’s values. Lastly, it underscores Opportunity: Meridian commits to providing quality homes and services for diverse individuals, emphasizing respecting all community members’ dignity.
