Challenge
Grinnell was conceived as an affordable housing community serving families and individuals with special needs, including residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Beyond providing housing, the project sought to create a welcoming environment that fostered stability, connection, and belonging while establishing a positive presence within Berkeley’s active and evolving neighborhood fabric.
Solution
Argus developed a branding and environmental graphics program inspired by Grinnell, the beloved Berkeley peregrine falcon whose story became a symbol of resilience, community, and renewal. Through brand strategy, identity development, environmental graphics, interpretive storytelling, signage, and wayfinding, we created a cohesive placemaking experience rooted in the themes of home, stability, and community. The program connected residents and visitors to both the property’s mission and its uniquely local story while integrating seamlessly with the architecture and resident amenities.
Impact
The resulting brand experience transformed Grinnell into more than a housing development—it became a place with a distinct identity and meaningful connection to Berkeley. Storytelling, graphics, and signage reinforce a sense of belonging, support navigation and community interaction, and celebrate a local legacy that resonates with residents and neighbors alike. The project creates a welcoming environment that strengthens community pride while supporting Grinnell’s role as an inclusive and vibrant place to call home.
