Challenge
Sunnydale’s HOPE SF redevelopment is one of San Francisco’s largest public housing revitalization efforts, transforming a 50-acre site into a connected mixed-income community with new housing, parks, streetscapes, and neighborhood amenities. Argus partnered with the development team to create a comprehensive environmental graphics, placemaking, and wayfinding strategy that strengthens community identity, improves pedestrian navigation, and connects residents and visitors to the evolving neighborhood experience.
Solution
Argus developed a comprehensive environmental graphics program rooted in community engagement, placemaking, and accessibility. Through extensive listening sessions and stakeholder engagement, the team worked closely with residents and project partners to better understand how people experienced the neighborhood, what cultural and historical elements should be preserved, and how the community wanted to represent itself moving forward. The process included exploring alternate neighborhood naming approaches and identity strategies to ensure the environmental graphics program authentically reflected the community’s values, heritage, and aspirations.
Using a human-centered wayfinding approach, Argus created a layered system of gateway markers, pedestrian and vehicular directional signage, interpretive elements, kiosks, and neighborhood identity features that guide residents and visitors naturally through the community. The strategy integrated seamlessly with Sunnydale’s landscape and architectural framework while reinforcing a cohesive identity through progressive information hierarchy, branded environmental graphics, and pedestrian-focused circulation planning.
Impact
The resulting environmental graphics program helps transform Sunnydale into a more legible, welcoming, and connected neighborhood experience while reinforcing a strong sense of place rooted in community identity. By combining resident engagement with thoughtful wayfinding and placemaking, Argus helped create a framework that improves navigation, supports safety and accessibility, and celebrates the neighborhood’s cultural legacy. Designed to scale alongside the long-term redevelopment, the program establishes a cohesive identity system that will continue supporting residents and visitors as Sunnydale evolves into one of San Francisco’s most significant neighborhood revitalization efforts. The project demonstrates Argus’ approach to community-centered environmental graphics and placemaking for urban redevelopment — creating spaces that strengthen identity, improve navigation, and foster lasting connections between people and place.
